Backflow
can occur when the pressure on a public water supply is less
than the pressure on a water customer's system.
For
example, if a fire department draws too much water while fighting
a fire, it would reduce the water pressure in the area and
therefore back-siphon water and other matter that could contaminate
the water supply. |

Backflow
Devices prevent the "backflow" of
foreign liquids and other matter into the public water supply, which
could result in contamination.
While uncommon, pressure differentials can happen and protective
devices must be used as required by law to protect the water supply. |
